Start at Powell and Market, where you'll see the famous Cable Car Turnaround. Across the street is the San Francisco Shopping Center and Nordstrom's. The spiral escalators here are a destination in themselves.
If you follow the cable car line up Powell, you'll start to understand why
Union Square is known for its shopping experience. All the corporate
mega stores have planted their feet in this area, creating blocks and
blocks of interesting window displays and massive crowds. Macys
Union Square, is a must see for guys and girls. It's the largest department
store west of New York City.
Union Square Plaza is a beautiful place to people watch and admire
San Francisco's architecture. Within Union Square plaza, you'll find TIX,
half-price ticket booth. Go here if you want to see a play or show
without breaking your budget. For the best selection, get in line about
30 minutes before half-price tickets go on sale. At the plaza's opposite
end, you'll find Emporio Rulli, a good place for coffee and a pastry. The
plaza is a must see during Christmas, when a tree and ice rink dominate
the space.
Art galleries, theatres hosting Broadway shows, and five star hotels
surround Union Square. Walk in any direction and find something
interesting!
