How to play the game of life:

  • 1. Enter your name into the player field.
  • 2. Wait for someone to join the game.
  • 3. When player 2 joins, player 1 will be given a card with a situation and 3 choices.
  • 4. Player 1 will click on an choice and get feedback.
  • 5. Player 2 will be given a card with a situation and 3 choices.
  • 6. Player 2 will click on a choice and get feedback.
  • 7. Player 1 will be given a card with a situation and 3 choices.

The game goes on like this until your player hits the center of the board - "Nirvana."

I created the content by putting it into xml which was then incorporated into the code. I also created the preloader for the game.

Working with ActionScript 3 has been a major challenge for me. Although I am still not completely comfortable creating the code from scratch, I can read through it and understand what it's doing in the game. I had a lot of guidance from Justin, Marisela and Kendra. I am quite proud of this project as it was inspiring to make a game of choices.

Building the board game, started out with a small brain storming session. From there we decided the objectives of the game, how players would accumulate points along the way, what determines the winner, and what happens when players win or lose. From here we started creating objects to use with action-script. We then set up a simple board game allowing for two players to log in, and the first player receives a card when the second player has logged in. This allowed for us to then fill in the gaps, make the board nicer, and add some more logic to the card option selection handlers. The next step was determining a winner at the end. The game needed to detect a players finish, as well as only one player being left, and who wins at the very end. This is where the logic began to get messy. We realized we had too many if else statements so the challenge at the end of the project was deciphering through all of this logic in order to make sure every possible scenario played out as we had hoped. The end result is a fun a two person board game based around the struggles and decisions faced in life. The user must reach "Nirvana" in the center of the board by traveling there from three different paths, long, short, and medium. The user at the end with the most wisdom points is declared the winner.

I was the designer for "I Don't Know Yet" and to be honest it was a challenge to create the overall look of the game. As a group, and from the beginning stages, I felt that the games was going to have a darker theme to it and that the design should reflect that, but as more discussion went on, there were talks of incorporating color. To add to that, a more surreal look. The look was mostly inspired by Cara's tattoo.

I tend to design cutesy illustrations, so this was a stretch.

One thing that was mentioned was an unconventional board, nothing something not typical of your average board game. So I drew inspirations from Lawrence Yang's illustration blowatlife.blogspot.com/2009/02/ia-doodle.html for the board, as well as some of his other pieces for the look. At first I was going to try to make the background a watercolor, but quickly realized that it might be pixelated once imported in (if not scanned in properly), so I wen the digital route. I chose colors that the group felt represented each path the best (deviation away from the dark theme). Once the board and the background were done, I tried to keep the every other component (cards, title, player stats) cohesive to them.

For this game I was a combination of programmer and web designer. This was great for me because I learned about xml in this project. I set up the parser for the xml, and I really learned a lot. As far as the site goes I wanted to test and stretch my skills so I used some jQuery and javascript to make the functionality more interesting.

Coming up with the concept was really the most fun part, first of all the group was an amazing team and the concept was really great. We were sitting in class figuring out what kind of game we should make, and I really love board games, so I suggested to make a candy land like game. Now for the theme, I looked over at Cara's tattoo and said we should make it light and dark with roses and skulls. Our group took off running from there.
